Student Involvement

Since Oct. 8, the Women’s Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has been celebrating the UNL Week Without Violence. The center joined efforts with both on- and off-campus organizations to spread awareness of different forms of violence and make a stand against abuse.

Loud music, flashing lights and neon paint lit up the plaza north of the Adele Learning Commons at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Thursday, Sept. 22. Campus NightLife’s Neon Nights invited students to get covered in neon paint while dancing to popular music and spending time with friends.

More than 1,200 students  came to get their white clothes soaked in paint. Laughter and screaming could be heard throughout campus as gallons of paint were sprayed over the crowd and fog machines went off.

Cowboy hats, chaps, boots and roping gear commonly are seen around the state of Nebraska thanks to the dominant agriculture scene. However, these artifacts and the entire rodeo concept are unfamiliar to many international students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Smiles, hearty laughter and stories of the good old days flowed freely when members of Kappa Alpha Psi gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Eta Chapter at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

“It’s like a second homecoming – though UNL has their homecoming in the fall, it’s like that second homecoming for the individuals and they just made a big weekend out of it,” said Alfonzo Cooper, a graduate advisor to the Kappa Alpha Psi chapter at UNL.

Sydney Goldberg of St. Joseph, Missouri and Nicholas Knopik of Lincoln received UNL’s 2016 Outstanding Student Leadership Awards. Juan Franco, vice chancellor for student affairs, presented the awards during an April 22 ceremony at the Van Brunt Visitors Center.

On April 13, Student Involvement hosted the Student Impact Awards, a program to honor students who have made significant contributions to their student organization and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. In addition to highlighting individual contributions, the awards also recognized student organizations that have made significant impact during the 2015-2016 academic year.

More than 400 students, staff, faculty and community members participated in Women’s Week events. Hosted March 5 -18, 2016, the event included movie screenings, panel discussions, art exhibits, keynote lectures, athletic events and technology centered event – all centered around the mission of empowering women.
