Tuesday, April 11, 2017 Greek Weekend filled with activities, friendly competition
From Friday, April 7 to Monday, April 10, sororities and fraternities participated in Greek Weekend. Groups of chapters called triads worked together to try and win Greek Weekend bragging rights.
“This year our theme was celebrating traditions and to exemplify this theme through the banner competition and lip sync competition we chose different decades the triads will have to incorporate,” said Mary Kroupa, committee chair of Greek Weekend. “For example, one triad has the decade 1960s in which they choose music and dance to portray the traditions of the decade through the lip sync competition.”
Activities began on Friday with a banner competition. Triads hung banners in the Nebraska Union by the Food Court, and members of the Greek community voted for the best design. Meanwhile, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life hosted a coin drive to raise money for the Cedars Youth Opportunity Center and a food drive that raised over 1,000 items for the Huskers Helping Huskers Pantry+.
The coin drive continued later that evening at the Husker baseball game, where Greek members had the opportunity to intermingle with other students and cheer on the team. More than 500 Greek students attended the game.
On Saturday, 2,113 Greek members volunteered in the Big Event to earn points for their triad. Later, Greeks participated in a new event, a trivia competition called “Greeks Who Think” in the Nebraska Union. Participants were asked questions about pop culture from various decades. Organizers said the trivia was added this year to balance out the week's events to provide each chapter a chance to shine.
Sunday’s activities included Meet the Greeks, which provided international students with the opportunity to meet fraternity and sorority members and learn more about Greek life at Nebraska.
The final event was Monday’s lip sync battle. Triads demonstrated the culture of their assigned decade through their dance and song. The winners were announced at the end of the evening with Gamma Phi Beta, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Alpha Mu and Beta Sigma Psi taking top honors.
