Student Involvement hosted recognized student organization (RSO) workshops on risk management, motivation and inspiration, civil discourse and navigating the Student Organization Financial Services (SOFS).

Director of Risk Management and Insured Benefits Gayle Schanou, Outdoor Adventure Center Coordinator Todd Grier and Coordinator of Fraternity Life Jon Gayer led the risk management workshop on Feb. 14. The presenters discussed perceived risk and how to be prepared for unexpected situations.

“For the Rodeo Club, it was huge for them to hear stuff that could be considered risk,” said Nick Ames, assistant director for student organizations in Student Involvement and a member of the RSO Oversight Committee. “They know a lot of it because they work with risk, but it was good for them to hear it and to see that stuff does happen and you need to be prepared.”

Ames led the motivation and inspiration workshop on Feb. 15, where students learned how to help their organization reach their goals. On Feb. 22, Grier and Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator for Nebraska Athletics Lawrence Chatters led the workshop on civil discourse. On Feb. 28, Accounting Clerk Michelle McLaughlin from SOFS and Assistant Director of Programs from the Alumni Association Jordan Gonzales told students about existing protocols and procedures for event planning and why the guidelines exist.

Student Involvement identified the workshop topics based on questions and feedback from student organizations over the past few years. Ames stated that although there were not as many RSOs represented as desired, the leaders in attendance made it clear that they enjoyed the workshops. He is in the process of creating an assessment to send to leaders to gain insight on what to improve for next year.
