More than 300 local volunteers are needed to provide a one-day, one-stop shop of health and human services for people experiencing homelessness at Project Connect Lincoln and Stand Down, happening 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. September 14, 2021 at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
The biggest volunteer need is for Navigators, who will aid in guiding guests through the event. Individuals who speak a language in addition to English are highly desirable as a Navigator. Shifts are available for morning, afternoon, and all-day. Other volunteer roles include food servers, bike repair and helping with setup and teardown.
Volunteers who sign up by August 27 are guaranteed a volunteer t-shirt.
According to a recent Point-In-Time Count it's estimated that 457 individuals are homeless on a given night in Lincoln and more than 3% are US military veterans.
In 2019, the Project Connect Lincoln event provided 616 guests and 90 companion animals with essential services including haircuts, dental screenings, foot care, immunizations, job search assistance and more than 1,250 meals were served.
This volunteer opportunity is part the The 9/11 National Day of Service, a nationwide event that began in 2002. People serve their communities on this day and during the week to honor the victims, survivors, firefighters, and law enforcement personnel who responded to the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
