Friday, November 18, 2022 Travel safe by planning ahead with these tips
As you rush to visit family and friends, be sure to plan ahead and keep safety in mind.
It’s normal to be tired after completing your last paper, exam or course which can make it easy to succumb to travel fatigue. Add in issues with winter weather and a plethora of other holiday travelers and you’ll be glad you took a few minutes to strategize.
Think Ahead & Get Prepared
- If possible, travel with others. You can share driving responsibilities and keep each other awake and alert.
- Plan for travel to take place when you’ll be alert and awake. Don’t leave after a long night of studying when you’re exhausted.
- Pack a safety kit. In the event you might become stranded, having blankets, a flashlight, food, water will help keep you safe and comfortable.
- Starting several days in advance, check the weather along your intended route in case you need to modify your course or adjust the time schedule.
- Carry some emergency cash. You never want to wish your credit or debit card to be stolen or lost, but it happens. The cash will come in handy.
- Don’t forget the charging cords for your electronic devices.
- Pack a coat, even if you are traveling to a warm climate. Nebraska's weather can dramatically change from day to day and you don't want to get caught without any warmth.
Tips for Road Travel
- Check your tire air pressure (including the spare tire) and ensure your headlights, taillights and blinkers are functioning properly.
- Leave early and don’t rush. Give yourself plenty of time. Days are shorter, so start early in the day.
- Wear your seatbelt.
- Be mindful of your gas gauge. If you don’t know your route, take early and frequent opportunities to top off your tank.
- When you stop for gas, clean your windshield and headlights.
- Leave alcohol out of the equation.
- Don’t be a distracted driver. Do not text on your phone or watch videos while behind the wheel. If traveling with a pet, keep it happy and comfortable (and off your lap). If you need to talk to someone, use speaker phone or a hands-free device.
- If driving long distances, stop at least every two hours to stretch, move around, and use the restroom.
- Wear appropriate shoes for driving.
For Air Travel
- Have your i.d. and passes needed for public travel…including your COVID Vaccine card if traveling in a region where you may need it.
- If checking luggage, be sure to pack one day's worth of clothing in your carry-on bag to take onto the plane with you, in case of lost or late-arriving luggage.
- Pack a snack and something to do. Flight changes/cancellations have been more common recently so plan for the unexpected.
- Pack up a face mask. You may not actually wear it, yet it’s better to have it ready as a precaution to prevent cold and flu germs from spreading between passengers.
