Thursday, May 20, 2021 Moore honored for work with students
Sue Moore, associate director for student advocacy and support, received the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s James V. Griesen Exemplary Service to Students Award.
“To know Sue is to appreciate her kindness, her unassuming nature, her humility and humor, but beyond and beneath these surface attributes is this depth of character, integrity, compassion and generosity,” said Jake Johnson, nominator and associate to the chancellor for institutional equity and compliance.
Moore was applauded for her educational approach to working with students whose choices are sometimes questionable or regrettable where she is non-judgmental and puts student learning at the forefront to encourage personal growth. She has served for more than 20 years through roles in University Housing, the Dean of Students Office, Student Conduct and Community Standards, and most recently Student Advocacy and Support.
“Sue is a model to me for how to live with difficulty and retain hope and optimism. She conveys this to the students that she helps every day. She is so successful at this because the compassion is authentic.”
Moore’s commitment to students is unwavering as she works well beyond typical office hours to serve students in crisis and assist their families. Most recently she also served on the COVID Care team, helping students with academic flexibility requests and personally reaching out to students isolated due to COVID-19.
Formal presentation of the award, which includes a stipend provided by the University of Nebraska Foundation, took place April 16 during the Student Luminary Awards reception. The annual honor was established in 1986 as the Chancellor’s Exemplary Service to Students award. It was renamed in 2006 to honor Griesen’s service to students. Griesen retired as vice chancellor for student affairs on July 30, 2006. He continued to work as a professor in educational administration and is now an emeritus professor. The award recognizes extraordinary and sustained performance by individuals serving Nebraska students.
