It feels like autumn has barely gotten underway yet the trees are rapidly shedding their leaves now. Lincoln has several great outdoor spots for you to savor the gorgeous foliage before the final leaf falls. Check out our list for the best on- and off- campus destinations.

  • The R Street Green Belt along the sidewalk between the Nebraska Union and the Sheldon Museum of Art. The two-block area abuts the south facades of Canfield Administration Building, Love Library, and Louise Pound Hall and is interspersed with sidewalks, gardens, and towering trees. A great spot to view the rare black squirrels.
  • Conveniently located right on city campus, the Sheldon Sculpture Garden is the perfect place to view some magnificent art while taking in the outdoor colors. There are tons of trees around, so stroll around campus to experience the changing of the seasons.
  • In addition to vast fields and shady trees, Antelope Park also contains both the Rotary Strolling Garden and the Hamann Rose Garden. Take a walk around these two free public gardens, or wander the tree-lined paths of the rest of the park.
  • If you're searching for an unconventional yet beautiful outdoors spot, Wyuka Cemetery may be the place for you. You are free to explore the historical landmark's grounds– perfect for any history or architecture buffs. Just be sure to be respectful of the nature of the site and any families that may be present.
  • Lincoln's largest city park, Wilderness Park, is ready to welcome you into its tree-filled woods. The network of walking, biking and horse trails within the park are packed with trees, so you won't miss any of the fall colors.
  • North of the Lied Center for Performing Arts, a maze of wood benches covered by a densely-planted tree grove give the feeling of hiding inside a shrub to study.
