Monday, November 15, 2021 LINCOLN LIVING: 9 things for college students to do outside before it's cold
Daylight Saving Time has passed and each day will be shorter and shorter until the solstice in mid-December. Before the winter winds arrive and falling temperatures keep you bundled up indoors, get outside and enjoy the following outdoor activities.
- Have a Backyard S'mores Party with friends. Although a fire-pit is always nice, you can easily toast or melt marshmallows with a grill, an air fryer or a microwave.
- Go for an extended walk or picnic to enjoy the autumn leaves. Check out this list of the best places in Lincoln to enjoy the changing colors.
- Take a spin on the local bike trails. In the warmer months, the urban trails are tree-lined tunnels, lush with foliage. In the autumn they become a kaleidoscope of wonder as the leaves change color and fall, becoming a crunchy carpet under your bike tires.
Need a bike? Rent one from the Outdoor Adventures Center's Bike Shop or use the BikeLNK short-term bikes. - Take a self-guided tour of the more than 30 outdoor art and sculptures on the UNL campus using the Sheldon Museum of Art's Sculpture Map.
- Venture over to Memorial Stadium on November 22 & 23 for the NSAA State High School Football Championships as the best high school teams in each division play to crown this year's overall winners.
- Gather a group of friends and play mini-golf at the Adventure Golf Center. The center is winding down for the season and hours are limited to weekends with nice weather. Visit their website to see the latest hours.
- Visit the Pioneers Park Nature Center. Located west of Lincoln, visitors can enjoy 668 acres of tallgrass prairie, woodlands, wetlands and a stream and eight miles of hiking trails winding through various habitats and taking visitors past non-releasable raptor exhibits and a small herd of bison.
- Play a few rounds of disc golf on the public courses at Tierra Park (south Lincoln) and Roper Park (north Lincoln).
- From 10 a.m to 1 p.m. November 19, browse and shop during the season's last outdoor Holiday Harvest Farmers Market at 48th St and Prescott Ave. Choose from a large selection of late-season locally grown produce and farm products as well as meats, cheeses, breads and pastries.
