Wednesday, April 20, 2022 Convenient donation options available to residence hall students during move out
Move-out time usually equates to a clean-out and purge as students pack up their rooms. With a bit of advance planning, Huskers can give a continued purpose to items through donation and recycling, rather than sending items to the dumpsters and the landfill.
A good first step to finding a new home for items is repurposing - giving clothing, food and furniture to a friend or roommate who can make use of them.
If you still has items left over, here are local options for donations.
Nonperishable food items
Starting May 2, collection bins for Husker Pantry will be located at each 24-hour welcome desk and The Village front desk, as well as at Herbie’s Market locations. Food items must be unopened and in good condition in the original packaging. Unused school supplies, cleaning products, and toiletries can also be donated.
Clothing, small appliances and small household items
Starting May 2, collection bins for Goodwill Industries will be located at each 24-hour welcome desk and The Village front desk. Clothing, small appliances and other small items can be dropped off as you prepare for move-out. Items must be clean and in good condition.
Furniture
Large furniture items cannot be donated at the welcome desks. For items larger than a laundry cart, students are encouraged to contact local donation centers about arranging a pick-up or finding a drop-off location.
Two recommendations to consider:
- Goodwill Industries | Items must be in “good used condition or better” which would not include items that are broken, torn, stained or covered in pet hair. Arrange a pickup or find a drop-off location.
- Habitat for Humanity (Lincoln) ReStore | Visit their website to learn about accepted items and how to arrange for a pick-up or drop-off.
