Secretly born in a prison to two political prisoners and raised in an abusive orphanage, hip hop artist and motivational resilience speaker Mike Africa Jr. began using his music at age 13 to raise awareness about his experiences in the hopes of gaining justice for his family.
He ultimately spent 40 years fighting for his parent’s successful release from prison.
On March 5, 2021, Africa Jr. is bringing his revolutionary message and dynamic stage performances – mixing music with speeches – to the Nebraska Union's Swanson Auditorium for the students of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
The free event begins at 7:30 p.m. and is presented by UPC Nebraska. In accordance with COVID-19 mitigation measures, attendance is open to UNL students only and available seating is very limited. Students should RSVP to secure a spot.
As a member of The MOVE Organization, Mike Africa Jr. travels the country as a speaker telling his incredible story with a powerful message, “Never Give Up.” He has previously shared the stage with Marc Lamont Hill, Tarana Burke, Ramona Africa, Dead Prez, Danny Glover and countless others, tackling issues such as mass incarceration, police brutality, and climate change.
To enter the event venue, attendees will need to show their EventPass app as well as their “Access Granted” status in the Safer Community app as part of the required check-in process. Each person must wear a face covering and maintain 6-feet of physical distancing throughout the event. Hand sanitizer will be available. Individuals experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms should not attend.
