Spring Break is an excellent chance to recharge your energy and spirit before you power through the semester’s second half. Some of you may snuggle in for a very long restful nap, while others keep busy with jobs or making steady progress on academic projects. If you’re undecided about your plans, check out these UNL-sponsored options for opportunities to give back to local communities, to experience the beautiful wonders of nature or to explore museums, sights, and entertainment in our local backyard.
CENTER FOR CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
Give back to Nebraska communities through a service-learning trip.
- March 21-26, 2020 | $75 per student
- You can help Nebraska communities affected by spring flooding. While assisting with disaster recovery and mitigation, UNL students gain strategic insights for effective disaster recovery and learn the importance of respecting communities’ wishes during times of need. The areas of Grand Island, Fremont, Bellevue, and Lynch will be visited. Sign-up deadline: March 2, 2020.
OUTDOOR ADVENTURES CENTER
Five different options to travel the United States and Mexico. Adventure gear and on-site meals are included in each price; transportation is included too, except the Sea Kayaking in Baja, Mexico trip (see note).

- Explore the local canyons and learn about the area’s native cultures while backpacking through the park. Also includes day-hikes in other regional parks with views of arches, canyons, and unique geological formations of the southwest United States. Sign-up deadline: 2 p.m. March 10, 2020

- Pedal along a 100-mile stretch of the historic Underground Railroad route, passing through fascinating sites in Mississippi and Tennessee. Familiarize yourself with the ways of bike touring, enjoy scenic views, and gain a deeper understanding of history with visits to the Tennessee River Museum and the Black History Museum in Corinth, Mississippi. - March 21-28, 2020 | $495 per student
- Travel to south-central Oklahoma for the chance to climb the granite of the Narrows, walls perched atop Mt. Scott, and learn core climbing skills along granite domes and cliffs. Spend the days climbing to your heart’s content and enjoy beautiful evenings camping in the spring weather. Sign-up deadline: 8 a.m. March 11, 2020
- March 19-29, 2020 | $495 per student
- Head down to the remote region of West Texas’ Rio Grande River for some true adventuring. Canoe through narrow canyons and rapids forged by iconic watersheds in the desert; hike and explore smaller side canyons and abandoned homesteads; and camp under the vast desert sky. Sign-up deadline: 2 p.m. March 9, 2020
- March 21-29, 2020 | $850 per student
- Enjoy seven days paddling in the famed open waters of Bahia de los Angeles (Bay of Angels) and experience beach camping and gorgeous seascapes along the coastline. Note: this trip departs from San Diego, California. Participants are responsible for their own travel from Nebraska to San Diego (and return) and must have a valid passport for the international travel. Sign-up deadline: 2 p.m. March 10, 2020
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS & SCHOLARS OFFICE
