Friday, October 21, 2022 4 tips to maintain motivation
As the semester rolls past the halfway point, it can be challenging to stay motivated to accomplish your goals. Here the professionals from Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) offer tips for staying strong or to increase your motivation through the end of the semester.
#1 – Routine: Consistency is key.
Behavior precedes motivation sometimes because as humans we aren’t naturally motivated 24/7. And when we look at a daunting task it can feel overwhelming. So, when trying a new behavior, it may be easiest to start small with 15- to 30-minute increments to see how that impacts motivation; then add time as you see fit.
#2 – Use positive self-talk.
It’s common to experience anxious thinking or negative self-talk when you feel overwhelmed. Try practicing reality-based language and positive self-talk when approaching stressors.
For example, some things you may tell yourself:
- “It’s normal to feel overwhelmed when having so much to do, but I’m capable of completing the task.”
- “What is one thing I can start with today?”
- “What strengths do I have that will help me through the next few weeks?
- “What resources would be helpful to use?”
#3 – Engage in self-care and stress relief activities.
Take breaks to do things to recharge. Exercise, engage in hobbies you enjoy, spend time with supportive people in your life, rest/relax and eat well. Setting time boundaries with extracurricular activities may help keep you balanced.
#4 – Get mental health support.
Talk to supportive individuals in your life to gain words of encouragement and understanding, as well as to help you problem solve. Connect with friends, family and classmates as you’re able. If you need additional support, consider talking with a Well-being Ambassador for a peer perspective or reaching out to the professionals at CAPS.
