Tuesday, December 17, 2019 Use winter break to jump-start your career

With fall semester behind you now, you’re likely daydreaming about all you want to do (or not do) over your well-deserved break. While it's important to recharge your brain and body with plenty of sleep, delicious holiday meals, time with loved ones and probably a few Netflix binges, you’ll also benefit from time spent thinking about your career.

That doesn't mean you have to hunker down and work on your résumé for the entirety of break. Instead, try taking a more personal and laid-back approach to career discovery over the holidays. Suggested ideas include:

To launch a campus conversation about relationship violence, Student Affairs has invited the One Love Foundation to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to discuss healthy versus unhealthy relationships. The presentations are part of the new Use Your Voice Initiative.

Student Affairs is honored to have 81 individuals receiving Service Awards in 2018. The annual awards are presented to university employees who complete years of service in five-year intervals. Awards are calculated both on consolidated or continuous regular employment.

On Friday, March 16, nearly 40 Student Affairs employees at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln attended a presentation on Freedom of Expression and the Law. Dr. Josephine Potuto, the Richard H. Larson Professor of Constitutional Law at the Nebraska College of Law, provided an overview of the First Amendment and its applications in the campus environment.

Student Affairs professionals are invited to participate in the spring 2018 professional development workshop, focusing on freedom of expression in the college campus environment.

On Friday, Mar. 16, Josephine (Jo) Potuto, Richard H. Larson Professor of Constitutional Law in the Nebraska College of Law, will present on the legal intricacies of freedom of expression and academic freedom.

Tuesday, February 20, 2018 Leadership Retreat encourages division-wide strategic thinking

On Thursday, Feb. 15, over 55 leaders from Student Affairs units met to jump-start the strategic planning process for FY18. Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Laurie Bellows implemented planning retreats to increase communication between units and levels within the division.

During this retreat, staff worked toward finalizing language for new mission, vision and values statements; solidifying strategic priorities; crafting organization-wide goals; and discussing diversity initiatives—both currently taking place and new ideas for development.

Monday, February 19, 2018 Tetreault honored for research contributions

Pat Tetreault, director of the LGBTQA+ Resource Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, received the 2018 Research Recognition Award from the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) Coalition for Sexual and Gender Identities.

The award recognizes the completed or ongoing research on gender and sexuality in higher education. Since 2007, Tetreault has conducted research to advance the LGBTQA+ community.

“I am grateful to learn from and connect with others while doing this work,” said Tetreault. “It enriches my life and my ability to help create positive change.”

Staff at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln can learn fundamental assessment practices, review policies with campus collaborators and hear examples of the impact and change inspired by data collection at the Assessment & Impact Summit on May 9, 2018. The Summit seeks to build staff members' skills in assessment to increase data and analytical competencies to improve the student experience.

Nominations are sought for the James V. Griesen Exemplary Service to Students Award and the University of Nebraska Foundation/Builders Award for Outstanding Academic Advising. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 19.

Tuesday, October 24, 2017 Harris leads conversation on disabilities

On Friday, Oct. 27, more than 70 employees at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln participated in a professional development program on disabilities and interpersonal communication sponsored by Student Affairs. Presenter Richard Harris, retired director of student disability services at Ball State University, addressed common stereotypes through cartoons and led a discussion on how cartoons have brought disability issues to the mainstream.
